One of the new mechanics introduced to the series by Mario Kart World is the charged jump. Initiating a charged jump and the perceived effect it has is similar to the drift mechanic that has become a staple of the Mario Kart series. The only difference is that charged jumps happen when you're driving in a straight line rather than drifting around a bend.
It doesn't work in online, but it's a cheeky tip for Grand Prix races.
