It happened - NetEase has responded to the gooner allegations. In an interview, someone was bold enough to ask Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen how he responds to people calling the hero shooter a "gooner game", and he didn't really dispute the label.
Speaking to Rivals Assembled, Chen - better known by his nickname, Guangguang - said that the skins are inspired by the comics. In other words, it's the source material's fault, as many of the characters are sexualised by Marvel itself.
"These all come from comic designs," says Guangguang, specifically commenting on skins for Squirrel Girl and Psylocke. "We take those classic comic designs and create some more fashionable designs based on them to gain players' appreciation."
He also argues that these skins suit the seasons in which they appear. "As mentioned earlier with the Squirrel Girl Krakoa Resort skin, these are actually designs based on real-world themes and the season's storyline," he says.
