Monolith Productions has announced that they're removing all microtransactions in Middle-earth: Shadow of War. In a blog post on the community blog, MonolithMark claimed that the premium items had "risked undermining the heart of our game, the Nemesis System." In order to restore the integrity of that system, the team will be removing Gold, War Chests, and the Market in a free update on July 17.
These systems, and other loot box systems, were harshly criticized by the gaming community, though their actual impacts on the game were more muted than gamers had initially feared. Despite the controversy, Shadow of War received an average review score of 82 from critics, earning our "Strong" rating.
The upcoming free update will also update the "Shadow Wars" section of the campaign by adding "new narrative elements" and streamlining "for a more cohesive experience."
