Although there are often debates about whether a certain video game is too scary, for the Resident Evil franchise at least, that seems to be the developers' primary goal. Going back to the first entry in the franchise, a moody atmosphere and perfected camera angles made sure every corridor left you on the edge of your seat.
But that may leave the most squeamish of us asking: Are there any ways to help if a game gets too scary? After all, in this age of accessibility, options are often put in place so that anyone can enjoy a game, such as the famous arachnophobia modes in the Grounded series, which help those particularly fearful of spiders.
For the upcoming Resident Evil Requiem, that question is on the mind of director Koshi Nakanishi, who also directed Resident Evil 7. According to him, in a recent talk with GamesRadar+, Resident Evil 7 may have even been “too scary.”
So, when designing the upcoming Resident Evil title, Nakanishi has incorporated a few tricks found elsewhere in the franchise to mitigate the scariness of the experience, introducing an alternative way to play, which hopefully allows anyone to enjoy Resident Evil Requiem.
