I Had No Idea That The Virtual Boy Was What My Switch 2 Needed, But Now I'm Actually Hyped

While I’ve always owned Xbox and PlayStation consoles too, Nintendo systems and games have a soft spot in my heart that no other publisher can really touch.

I think this is because I’m drawn to creativity, innovation, eccentricity, and general weirdness. It’s the same reason I love the movies of Tim Burton, I suppose. The wiry-haired filmmaker also delves into the creepy and macabre as much as he can get away with, which is a rarity for Nintendo, but there are lots of parallels to be drawn here nonetheless.

You’ve got to admire a company that heard all the wailing and gnashing of teeth for Switch 2 news pre-launch, then said, “Hey, you know what everyone wants right now? Alarmo.”

You truly never know what the heck Nintendo’s going to announce next, but you can usually be sure it’s going to be a curveball. Nintendo DS and Wii, for instance, were both real shockers when they were first revealed. A handheld system with two screens? A remote-waggling, motion-controlled console? Only Nintendo.

These because we darn well can, that’s why sensibilities have brought the company some major wins (both the aforementioned systems, for instance), but the risk...
