For all its multitude of awards and praise from diehard fans, Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth had an infamously iffy launch. There's a big difference between words like "iffy" and "bad", mind you, but Square Enix hardly shied away from admitting things hadn't quite gone as well as they had hoped for, and as a reminder, the "yeah, but they said that about Tomb Raider" joke is ancient, outdated, and we don't need to keep making it in 2025.
Things have been on an apparent upswing since then, however. Those awards surely helped. Word-of-mouth has maintained a strong enough cadence to contribute greatly. Sales "satisfied" Square by the tail end of 2024 at the latest. While it's a bit odd to think of a a mainline title from a series which once carried massive inherent appeal as a "little game that could" slow success story, it seems like that might well be what FF7 Rebirth has become!
