Yesterday, Mojang announced the Mounts of Mayhem update, which will introduce zombie horses, an underwater mount, and a brand-new weapon—the spear—to Minecraft.
A new weapon is always exciting, but what's especially interesting about the spear is that it's the first new tiered tool in 15 years. As pointed out by @SirBac0nFace, the last tool to be introduced with tiers was the hoe in 2010, which was before the game had even entered alpha. "It's been that long".
What that means is that, unlike the mace or trident, the spear can be crafted with wood, copper, iron, gold, diamond, and netherite, each version with unique, varying stats. The mace, by comparison, comes in one form and requires a heavy core and breeze rod to craft. Spears are much cheaper, using up just two sticks and the material of your choice, i.e. a single diamond.
The spear is Minecraft history in the making, but it's not the only historical inclusion in the new Mounts of Mayhem update. It will also introduce the first tiered armour in over a decade.
