How Did Sucker Punch Make Ghost Of Yotei So Visually Stunning? Check Out This Deep Dive Blog Post

One of the biggest draws of Ghost of Yotei is its stunning visuals, and Sucker Punch has given us a rundown on how they managed some of its incredible effects and vistas.

The studio’s director of programming, Adrian Bentley, wrote a post on the PlayStation Blog explaining some of the graphical techniques used in Ghost of Yotei’s development.

He says that the overall goal with the game was to further emphasize the player’s “sense of freedom in an untamed wilderness” compared to Ghost of Tsushima, with less intrusive player guidance, longer environmental sightlines, and more flexible combat, among other things.

As you might expect, getting all that to work on the PS5 without sacrificing performance was not easy to accomplish, especially considering the sheer size of the game’s map.

Making The Most Of The PS5 Hardware

According to Bentley, a big part of the vision for free exploration came down to vistas and sightlines, with the idea being that the player would be able to “follow their curiosity to find the game,” which proved a challenge for rendering distant terrain, mountains, and foliage.
