Best-Selling YA Book Series The Last Kids on Earth Is Getting a Video Game

The Last Kids on Earth is already a massively popular young adult book series and Netflix series, and now it's being made into a game too. Launching later this year, The Last Kids on Earth and The Staff of Doom is coming to most major platforms on June 4, including Switch, Xbox, PlayStation and PC via Steam.

The Last Kids on Earth and the Staff of Doom will offer four-player co-op with players choosing their character from the show's main cast, Jack, Quint, June and Dirk. At launch, co-op will be limited to local play, though a post-launch patch will add online multiplayer functionality.

A new trailer sets up the game's premise, which continues on from the six-books-and-counting story universe.

Just this week, The Last Kids on Earth interactive movie debuted on Netflix. Separate from the three seasons already on Netflix, this interactive movie plays like a Telltale game, with players making choices at various points in the story. The Staff of Doom, meanwhile, will play like a third-person action-adventure, with semi-open world levels, loot to collect, and different weapons to use on the family-friendly zombie hordes.

The protagonist, Jack, has long made video game references and jokes, as he himself is an avid gamer, so it seems like a seamless transition for the series to complete the circle and become a game. The animated series features the voice talents of Mark Hamill, Rosario Dawson, Catherine O'Hara, Keith David, Bruce Campbell, Garland Whitt, Montse Hernandez and Charles Demers, in addition to Nick Wolfhard voicing the lead character Jack Sullivan. Wolfhard, Hernandez, Whitt and Demers will also voice their characters in the upcoming video game.
