In a rather chaotic tweet fitting of the folks at Double Fine, a tweet this morning both celebrated the past and promises the future of Psychonauts.
Psychonauts 2 has long been called a 2021 game, but as the team at Double Fine and Microsoft has been so quiet on that front, one may have wondered if the game was getting delayed. According to the team on Twitter, fans need not fear that. It sounds like there is already a date decided and we'll hear about it soon, perhaps even at E3.
Here's how the team put it on Twitter, including a special 16th-anniversary celebration of the original game (with our emphasis added).
"On this, the day of Psychonauts' birthday, let us also watch its original trailer... which is both very good and getting *sniffle* older now that it can officially earn its driver's license now!
And yes, Psychonauts 2 is this year and yes I've been mentioning that here and elsewhere for a while but no I can't tell you when because someone from THE COMPANY would arrange for a mysterious "cactus accident" to happen to me...
But it is real. It is playable. It is coming."
There are a few Xbox Game Studios projects without solid release dates that we still anticipate will hit stores and Game Pass before the calendar rolls over to 2022. Chief among them is, well, Master Chief himself in Halo Infinite. If that's on track, it seems like a lock for November, but Psychonauts 2 could really arrive at any time, before E3, after E3, heck, maybe even during E3 if Xbox wants to be so bold.
Psychonauts 2 is still coming to platforms beyond Xbox and Game Pass as the game's release deal was sealed before Microsoft acquired Double Fine in 2018.
