Square Enix is far from the only game developer to be talking about AI these days.

Blizzard Entertainment confirmed earlier this year that they've been using AI to tackle more tedious tasks in an effort to allow its developers to be more creative. To Blizzard's credit, yes, using it to take care of the most tedious and repetitive tasks can have its benefits. Let the developers do what they do best (imagine and create) rather than spending who knows how long doing mundane tasks. Having said that, the usage of AI in game development is still something of a sore subject for most.

Square Enix is looking to take a similar approach to how AI can assist its game development.

As reported in their most recent financial update, the studio has initiated joint research with the University of Tokyo's Matsuo Laboratory to "improve the efficiency of game developers through the process of AI technologies." The research team is made up of over ten members, including researchers from the Matsuo Laboratory and engineers from Square Enix. The overall goal is to automate 70% of Square Enix's QA and debugging tasks in game development by the end of 2027.
