30 Years Later, There's Still No Multiplayer Mayhem Quite Like Worms

Some realizations just stop you in your tracks. Opening the cupboard to retrieve that doughnut you’d been saving only to find that somebody’s already sneakily eaten it (a not-so-hypothetical example from my own kitchen earlier today), for instance. Or the fact that, in November 2025, the original Worms turns 30 years old.

This series, for me, defined the mid-to-late 90s just as much as Jurassic Park, the Backstreet Boys, and so many other pop culture behemoths of the time. Just like those two, come to think of it, it's still going today in different iterations, but the early days will always be the best. Worms Armageddon and “I Want It That Way” both arrived in 1999, and Team17 has been as unsuccessful in scaling those heights again since as Nick Carter and co have.

Worms Armageddon is widely regarded as one of the best series entries of all, and a PS1 multiplayer masterpiece. For me personally, it’s the most varied package, the least diluted by gimmicks that later games embraced.
