Fallout: New Vegas Writer Is Worried That He Made Caesar Too Convincing

Fallout: New Vegas is a pretty great game, but let's be honest, it's not for its gameplay. It's always been a game that excels for its characters and writing, with a main story that weaves conflict between various different parties with extremely differing philosophies. One of the more interesting is Caesar's Legion, led by the charismatic titular villain Caesar. While there's a lot of nuance in the game, most people generally agree that the group that burns people at the stake and keeps slaves is probably the bad one.

Despite this, Fallout: New Vegas did its best to make Caesar seem downright reasonable in places, choosing to make him semi-relatable to some instead of a cartoon villain that's easy to hate. I think it's something that makes Fallout: New Vegas extremely well-written, but it's also something that lead writer John Gonzalez is worried about in today's political climate.

In an interview with PC Gamer, Gonzalez explains that he tasked himself with coming up with "a robust argument for authoritarianism" when writing Caesar, claiming that "you have to try to make your adversaries as strong as possible." However, he now wonders if we could "back off of that now"...
