Larian Studios' Swen Vincke has walked back the company's stance on using generative AI during concept art development, but that doesn't mean the tech won't be used elsewhere in the upcoming Divinity's development.
As part of an AMA on Reddit (as spotted by Stephen Totilo on Bluesky), Vincke responded to a user's questions about his feelings on generative AI, saying that Larian had "decided to refrain from using gen AI tools during concept art development" in order to prevent "discussion about the origin of the art".
However, Vincke followed that comment up by saying that he still thinks generative AI can "improve the speed" with which Larian experiments and "refine[s] ideas", leading to a "more focused development cycle, less waste, and ultimately, a higher-quality game".
Vincke says Larian won't use what he calls "creative assets" without "being 100% sure about the origins of the training data and the consent of those who created the data". He says if generative AI is used to create assets, it will be "trained on data [Larian owns]".
