Popular space MMO Star Citizen is currently free to play for a limited time only. Developer Cloud Imperium Games has made Star Citizen free-to-play as part of the ongoing Foundation Festival 2024 event.

The development of Star Citizen has been somewhat controversial. An initial early build was first released back in 2013 after a successful Kickstarter campaign, and development has continued over the last decade. Over the years, it seems as though the game has suffered from feature creep, with the planned scale of Star Citizen always increasing, leaving it still far from a 1.0 release of the full game. Even now, Star Citizen continues to break fundraising records, indicating that the game's audience isn't going anywhere despite the long development time.

Publisher Roberts Space Industries reveals that it has been hundreds of Star Citizens players after a recent influx of cheating.

As part of its ongoing Foundation Festival 2024, Cloud Imperium Games has made its space MMO Star Citizen free to play until July 19.
