A brand-new Borderlands game has just dropped out of nowhere, and the best part is, it's free. The iconic looter shooter series has stumbled with its recent entries; Borderlands 3's writing is widely panned, and Borderlands 4 received a mixed reception, followed by the indefinite delay of its Switch 2 port earlier this year.

A new release is still noteworthy, though, so it's odd that Borderlands Mobile has just arrived on the iOS App Store with no official announcement. There doesn't appear to be any word from developer Zynga, franchise creator Gearbox, nor parent company 2K. The free-to-play Borderlands Mobile appears to be exclusive to iOS for the moment, and adapts the series' signature first-person gameplay into bite-size missions.

Borderlands Mobile is age-rated 17+ and requires iOS 18.0 or later. It was developed by mobile gaming giant Zynga, known for Words with Friends, FarmVille, and many others. A new, free-to-play Borderlands game is a noteworthy release, even if it being a mobile game might turn many away, but Borderlands Mobile appears to have been shadowdropped with virtually no marketing.
