I have to say, I'm a big fan of the new direction Pokémon has taken over the last few years. I'm not even going to try and defend the horrible performance of some of the recent games, but the whole open-world approach has really worked for me. I love stumbling across Pokémon in real-time, and feeling like I'm on a real adventure.

With that said, I still yearn for the feel of classic Pokémon. I'll often retreat to the world of ROM hacks and fan games to play something that feels familiar yet new whenever I get the itch. And if you're also looking for that classic Pokémon feeling, there's one game you definitely need on your radar, because it looks seriously special.

I've actually spoken about Pokémon Gamma Emerald before. This is a fan-made remake/re-imagining of original GBA classic that opts for a 2.5D look that wouldn't seem out of place in Octopath Traveller. YouTuber and developer UndreamedPanic is the person behind this impressive project, and they've been working hard on Pokémon Gamma Emerald for years now.
