Final Fantasy is an institution. Created back in 1987, it's about to hit its 40th anniversary, which is an astounding milestone that very few developers (such as Nintendo) can celebrate. Given how consistent Final Fantasy is throughout its lifetime, it's an easy series to recommend to people who haven't played an RPG before.
Of course, there are tons of ways you can break down those recommendations. Final Fantasy 7 is a popular place to start, as is Final Fantasy 6. But there are a handful of even older entries that still hold up and are worth trying out. You just need to know where to look.

This one comes with very little in the way of caveats, and if you haven't played it before and are a big series fan, now might be the perfect time.
