Final Fantasy 9 Is Officially Getting A Sequel After 26 Years

Final Fantasy IX remains one of the best games in the beloved fantasy RPG series, with the game bringing in a new millenium in a very big way when it launched back in 2000. As such, it's a little odd that we never got a direct sequel to play through, though it is obviously a closed and finished narrative in its own right.

The game had some of the more memorable cast members from the franchise as a whole, and the gameplay was good, if a little slow in areas. Though there are plenty of rumors swirling that a remake of the game is on the way after Square Enix gets done with Final Fantasy VII, the game very much stands alone right now. Fortunately, that's all about to change, and it's in a medium you might not have expected at all.

Final Fantasy IX: The Black Mages' Legacy is a 2D animated television series that's currently in production, which as the name may suggest, serves as a direct sequel to the events of the game. Vivi is arguably the biggest element of the original that they are drawing on, with his children taking center stage in this latest project....
