It's a very big year for The Legend of Zelda, as the beloved franchise celebrates 40 years since its inception, with many fans expecting some big announcements as a result. Though there hasn't been too much that has materialized as yet, rumors of an Ocarina of Time remake continue to circulate, having been given even more credence by the confirmation of the new Star Fox remake.

The movie also continues production without too much in the way of trouble, but that still leaves the question of what's coming next in terms of new games. Well, there are plenty of rumors in that department as well, and if one of the major revelations comes to pass, then we could be in for a very different protagonist next time around.

As first reported by Game Rant, leaker Nash Weedle has been discussing the future of the Zelda franchise on a May 6 Attack the Backlog podcast, where he claimed that Nintendo is working on a 2D Zelda game to release sometime in 2027.
