A new, fan-made Paper Mario mod is making the rounds, bringing a whole new story chapter to the classic RPG. First released in 2000 for the Nintendo 64 (2001 in the US), Paper Mario features turn-based RPG gameplay set in a side-scrolling, two-dimensional paper craft world. It spawned six sequels and, for its GameCube installment The Thousand Year Door, a 2024 remake.
But many of Paper Mario's sequels have failed to live up to the original. While The Thousand-Year Door was a classic in its own right, beginning with Super Paper Mario for the Wii, the series began to diverge from its original genre, first becoming a platformer, then an action-adventure-puzzle game. Now, fans have taken matters into their own hands, making a direct sequel to the Nintendo 64 original.
Paper Mario: Star Nova is a new mod for the original Paper Mario created largely by solo dev NicTube (spotted by Dark Side of Gaming). It continues the story of Paper Mario directly after its ending, featuring a new story, new characters, new party members, new enemies, and much more.
