Brand New PS5 Update Adding Feature That Steam Users Have Had for Years

It seems the PlayStation 5 is taking a page out of Steam's book, as the console is receiving a new update that publicly shows player counts for the top 10 games of the week. The PlayStation 5 is not known for this level of transparency in player counts, so this update comes as quite a surprise.

PC gamers have long had player count numbers for basically every video game on Steam, dating back to about 2013, when the unofficial SteamDB player count tracker launched. In 2022, Valve launched the official Steam Charts page, which details how many players are currently online or in-game on Steam, along with the current top-selling games and the most-played games at the moment. In comparison, neither the Xbox Series X/S nor the PlayStation 5 has an official player count number feature built into their UI. Often, console gamers have to rely on rough estimates, in-game player count numbers, or direct developer reports to gauge what a game's player base looks like. Meanwhile, on PC, fans can see what game has blown up on Steam at any given moment.
