Lord of the Rings games have been hit-and-miss over the years, though it's pretty much universally agreed that the IP deserves an official full-scale open-world RPG that does Tolkien's iconic Middle Earth justice. Up until this year, there hasn't been much in the way of exciting news on that front, despite there being obvious and massive interest.
Further, with the recent almost-certain cancelation of the new Lord of the Rings MMO from Amazon, the future of video game adaptations writ large has felt more and more uncertain. However, on the flip side, recent reports suggest that at least two different Lord of the Rings RPGs may be in the works from major AAA studios—one from Crystal Dynamics, the studio in charge of Tomb Raider, and a second RPG from Warhorse Studios that appeared in a recent leak.
