Created by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004, and released to the public two years later, Roblox has grown far beyond its origins as a collection of simple user-created games, with developers increasingly building experiences that rival standalone releases in terms of scope, ambition, and even success.
While Roblox is best known for its blocky aesthetic and user-generated experiences, developers have increasingly pushed the platform’s technical capabilities in recent years. In the name of enabling more visually sophisticated games, the company revealed that it will be embracing the use of AI graphics for Roblox, a stance that has received a mixed response. Nevertheless, the platform continues to experience record-breaking success. It hosts everything from role-playing games and simulators to competitive shooters, and some of these creations have amassed player counts that are impressive even by the standards of more traditional releases.
