A new 2D Metroid game has seemingly been leaked online for Nintendo Switch 2. Metroid Prime 4: Beyond was released in 2025, but Nintendo Switch 2 has yet to receive its own 2D game in the series. Metroid Dread came out in 2021 on the original Switch, so fans have been waiting nearly five years to see another entry in the franchise that goes back to its 2D roots.
The original Metroid was a 2D side-scrolling adventure game released for the NES in 1986. Nintendo brought the series into 3D in 2002 with the original Metroid Prime on GameCube. Since then, the company has released both 2D and 3D games starring protagonist Samus Aran. Metroid is celebrating its 40th anniversary this year, and a new 2D entry in the series would seem like the perfect way to celebrate the occasion.
