Grand Theft Auto 6 may face an unusual obstacle on its path to The Game Awards 2026, despite being one of the year's most obvious awards contenders. Considering it is currently on course to launch in late 2026, the issue may come down to whether enough jurors can play GTA 6 before nomination voting begins.

The Game Awards relies heavily on a voting jury, with fan voting accounting for a smaller portion of the final result. That structure generally works when critics and outlets have enough time with a game before ballots are due, but late-year releases can create problems when access is limited or review timing is unusually tight. For the November 19 release of GTA 6, both issues may come into play.

As highlighted by Polygon, the core concern is that if Rockstar does not distribute traditional review codes for GTA 6, few TGA 2026 jurors may have played enough of it before nomination voting begins. Although this year's dates have not been finalized, TGA nominations typically occur in the first half of November, before an eligibility cutoff date that commonly falls on the third Friday of the month.
