After weeks of rumors, Bethesda has announced that developer Obsidian Entertainment is indeed working on a new Fallout game. Although this game appears to be separate from Fallout 5, the details surrounding the game's setting and story are unclear. Obsidian's previous work on the franchise includes development of fan-favorite Fallout: New Vegas, and director Josh Sawyer is returning to helm this Fallout project as well.
This confirmation comes after the recent shake-up at Xbox, which saw over 3,200 employees laid off as part of a restructuring within the company. Both Obsidian and Bethesda were hit with these layoffs and apparently shifted work internally toward more Fallout experiences. As a result, Obsidian's work on Avowed 2 was reportedly canceled in favor of this new Fallout game, but there appears to be some hope that Avowed 2 will still be released someday, with a small team continuing to work on it.
