While the final seasons of Game of Thrones remain as divisive as ever, Daenerys Targaryen's rise to power across Essos is still widely regarded as one of the series' strongest story arcs. From liberating the Unsullied in Astapor to overthrowing the slave masters of Yunkai and Meereen, Daenerys gradually transformed from an exiled princess into one of the most powerful rulers in the world.

Although HBO's adaptation condensed or omitted significant portions of George R.R. Martin's A Song of Ice and Fire storyline, her campaign to end slavery and build an army remains one of the franchise's defining narratives. More importantly, it laid the foundation for everything that followed, as Daenerys would never have been able to sail for Westeros or lay a serious claim to the Iron Throne without the Unsullied, Grey Worm, or the reputation she forged during her years in Essos.
