While newer games like Pokemon Winds and Waves continue to push the series forward, celebrations like this also give older generations another chance to stand out. Some of Pokemon's most beloved adventures are now old enough to be considered classics, making anniversary merchandise an easy way for longtime fans to reconnect with them.
The Nintendo DS era is especially important to Pokemon's history. The system hosted several major releases for the franchise, including games that revisited older regions and brought them to a new generation of players. Among them, Pokemon HeartGold and SoulSilver remain particularly notable, having originally been released for the Nintendo DS in 2009.
