Nearly 20 years after its original release, The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion has received a surprise PC update designed to make Bethesda's classic RPG easier to play on modern hardware. The latest The Elder Scrolls 4: Oblivion update comes courtesy of GOG as part of a broader game preservation program.
Released in 2006, Oblivion arrived in a very different era of PC gaming, and some parts of the original version certainly haven't aged as gracefully as Cyrodiil itself. For example, modern controller support has historically been awkward, while something as simple as switching away from the game with Alt+Tab has caused many problems on newer systems. However, those quirks haven't stopped PC players from keeping the RPG alive through mods and community fixes. For a two-decade-old game, Oblivion has aged remarkably well in some ways, but getting the original PC version to run comfortably on modern hardware can still feel like a quest in itself.
A new Oblivion Remastered patch is now live for October 2026, bringing another round of fixes and improvements to Bethesda's RPG.
Released on October 15, 2026, GOG's new Oblivion build tackles several of those rough edges without attempting to remake the game...
