Rockstar gives up the ghost on Agent, abandons trademark

on | OpenCritic

After 11 years in limbo, Rockstar has finally given up the ghost on Agent - at least in its current form. As reported by Eurogamer, Rockstar has failed to renew their trademark with the US Patent and Trademark office.

Game fans shouldn't find this surprising. The game, first announced more than a decade ago, has been in development purgatory ever since. Initially intended as a PlayStation 3 exclusive, hot on the heels of the Grand Theft Auto franchise, the game received an incredible amount of buzz. Enough, in fact, to sustain interest through the years-long information drought. Despite that, many held out hope the game might surface in some form.

This report isn't a surprise but it will prove disappointing to espionage fans eager to see Rockstar's take on this vastly different gameplay type. Yet, if there's one thing we know to be true in the games industry, it's that "the end" isn't always the end. We may yet see "Agent" come to pass in some form but likely under a different name and perhaps entirely different style of game.
