Play Magazine has announced that the printed PlayStation publication will be shut down after occupying UK newsagents' shelves for nearly 30 years. PlayStation fans have followed Future Publishing’s magazine since the 90s, even through a rebrand that lasted three years. Play Magazine was one of the UK’s last printed gaming publications alongside Edge and PC Gamer, which are also run by Future.
The Official UK PlayStation Magazine was released in November 1995 alongside the launch of the first PlayStation console, and it ran for 108 issues before undergoing several redesigns with an abbreviation change from PSM to OPM. In May 2021, OPM rebranded to Play, and Future kept the same editorial team to work on the new publication. Considered the spiritual successor of OPM, Play’s 46th issue will be its last.
