NobleGamer Insurmountable Review
Sep 16, 2025
I recommend this game to people who can manage their expectations of roguelites, survival resource management, solitary character experiences, and hiking/climbing, because many negative reviews seem to be from people who don't understand any of these things.
So let me explain the core gameplay - Good, bad, indifferent:
+Game's look and feel is polished.
-The game's sound is limited to serviceable movement & event focused SFX, music, and some ambient environmental sounds. It is consistent with the solitary experience though, and no voices.
?If you don't like the relatively slow pace for movement, then walking speed can be sped up somewhat, know that hiking is not supposed to be fast. I personally plan to watch TV shows in the background when I'm less engaged in the movement.
?Don't expect a giant variety in events/encounters, though the other two mountains have some new event types, and there definitely are some missions different than "Hike to the summit, then down to a base camp".
?Camera movement is intentionally centered around the climber, but there is the ability to press a key ("V" + middle mouse button?) combo to fix the camera location and pan it up higher than usual.
+The in game tutorial and help available from pause screen are all intuitive.
?Auto pathfinding shows the most direct general path between what ever waypoints you left click. It does NOT optimize for energy consumption, body heat, time elapsed, or least risk. That is your job to determine what you want to focus on in terms of resource costs when you choose movement.
+Challenge is by design, though the first mountain was only a light challenge for me given the amount of non-optimal choices I made. So death is normal, but the game provide progression and upgrades between runs using a multi-faceted XP system.
+Two additional climber types can be unlocked when going to their areas of the first mountain on the global map and completing their mission by finding them.
