Since Epic took over the game, it's been a steady decline. Players are no longer banned for insults (my friends and I tested this extensively), and the ranking system is completely broken. I regularly play against people who are at a completely different skill level than me and single-handedly destroy my team. Often, you also get the feeling you're playing against cheaters. Suddenly, when you have the ball, your ping spikes, and when the ball is with the enemy team, it drops again. The servers are sometimes choppy, even though I have a very good ping of 19 ms. When trading was discontinued, it was also clear that Epic just wanted to milk the community. Everything has become overpriced; you can't really win anything but have to craft everything.
