Gensokyo Defenders is a fun and challenging tower defense game in which you can – and have to – go on the offensive, using your characters main attack and skills to keep your base from being destroyed. The game offers more than enough content for its asking price, and if you're the type of gamer that likes to 100% games, you'll be spending some extra hours with this release as you upgrade your structures to be able to get a three-star rating in the handful of levels that are too hard to beat with a perfect score the first time around.

Shikhondo: Soul Eater is a hardcore bullet hell release that even those who have a lot of experience with the genre are going to have a tough time playing. The screen comes alive with all the colors of the bullets that enemies and bosses shoot at you, giving you a small window of opportunity to try and stay alive, so you better be OK with dying a lot in this one! But if you're up for a challenge, then Shikhondo: Soul Eater is waiting for you on PlayStation 4!

Flood of Light is a charming and very relaxing puzzle experience that will keep you engaged for a handful of hours as you try to lower the water level of a city abandoned by its people. Sure, it has a minimal story that is told by the robots you meet and the letters you collect from the mailboxes you search, but the solid difficulty curve for puzzles and its simple gameplay mechanics will keep you coming back for more.

Zotrix: Solar Division is a tower defense game that is not going to win any awards for its looks, but if you, well, look past that, you will find a fun and challenging entry in a genre that has become a favorite of mine. There are 45 missions to complete, and rankings for your performance in Classic mode, so that you can see how good you really are, so there's more than enough content for its $14.99 asking price.

Jan 22, 2019

Hive Jump is a fun, and challenging 2D procedurally generated action platformer on Nintendo Switch that might feel a bit repetitive for some of you, especially if you don't like roguelike experiences with randomly produced levels to play. The game has its flaws, but once you get into the groove, you can have fun on your own or with some fun co-op sessions.

Sunless Sea: Zubmariner Edition is a brutally challenging strategy/sim release on PlayStation 4 that will test your skills in full. You're getting the main game as well as the Zumbariner expansion, hence the name of this edition, with a single purchase, making this the definitive console version of the game. You'll spend hours trying to micromanage things to make the most of your Echo so that you can keep your ship fueled and in tiptop shape and your crew properly fed so that they don't have to resort to eating the rats on the ship… or any diseased former crew members. Are you up for the challenge?

Die for Valhalla! is a fun beat ‘em up with a bit of strategy thrown in and some RPG elements that make it a fun game to play at home or on the go on Nintendo Switch. The two available modes make it possible for players of all skill levels to take the game for a spin, unlocking new clans as you go and finding the right Viking to help you defeat the onslaught of enemies that you will face. Large and dangerous bosses here and there will force you to be more careful as you enlist the aid of NPC Vikings or you can have up to three friends join you locally for some four-player mayhem.

Dog Gone Golfing is a fun 2D golfing release with simple gameplay mechanics that will keep you busy for a while if you want to get its Platinum trophy. It might feel a bit tedious and monotonous to some of you, so if the trailer didn't grab your attention, then playing it is not going to change that.

Anodyne is a fun minimalist bite-sized 16-bit infused action-adventure that pays homage to the beloved The Legend of Zelda series while doing its own thing. You can probably finish this one in a handful of hours, and you'll be back for more if you want to get all trophies to add a new Platinum trophy to your collection.

Hello Neighbor is an interesting release that is a bit too vague for its own good. It relies on some wonky physics for several of its puzzles, some of which are a bit “out there” about their solutions. It's a game that you're either going to love or hate as you try to complete its 8 to 10 hours long campaign.

While this game is a port to Nintendo's hybrid console, it has seen some major improvements to controls, balancing and even added features, such as new modes to play as and a local multiplayer option, which definitely adds to the experience of playing on the Nintendo Switch when compared to other consoles. Rain World is a challenging experience, to say the least. If you are looking for a new game to really test your skills, a game with little to hand-holding and lots of exploring or a game that has a little of all your favorite genres, you have to give this game a try. However, do keep in mind that the difficulty can be a bit stressful at times, making you leave the game to cool off for an hour or two… or maybe a few days before you're ready to try and take another stab at it.

The game will take a handful of hours to complete, with challenging boss fights and multiple difficulty choices. On top of that, there are also extra modes to add more flavor to the game: Challenge and Fight. Challenge mode encourages you to see how long you last fighting wave upon wave of enemies, bringing it closer to an endless mode of sorts. As for Fight mode, as the name suggests, it's all about your fighting style. The game is a cross-buy release, and it also offers separate Platinum trophy lists so that you can unlock two Platinum trophies for your efforts if you're willing to put the extra time into it!
