BAD - No. Just…. No. Find something else to play. Terrible controls on top of poor writing on top of confusing and boring gameplay makes Disaster Report 4 a game I wouldn’t pick up in the bargain bin where they give you 99% off.

WORTH CONSIDERING - One Piece: Pirate Warriors 4 lets you live out your wildest One Piece fever dream of crushing enemies as God Usopp, but the action grows stale after short time and after awhile you realize you’d much rather just be watching the anime again for the third time.

WORTH CONSIDERING - Panzer Dragoon: Remake will certainly appeal to fans of the original Saturn game and to those of you I say absolutely pick this one up. I had a fun time blasting my way through the game and really enjoyed the updated visuals. The new soundtrack lacks the punch of the original, but sounds more sophisticated. Luckily the original can be toggled from the options so you get the best of both worlds. A high price combined with a short campaign and a niche genre makes this one difficult to recommend to anyone except devoted fans.

EXCELLENT - Saints Row IV was Volition intentionally jumping the shark with their own franchise and somehow taking it to new heights in the process. Fanfare for the Saints brand faded a bit thanks to both time and some poorly received spin-offs, but even still I’d say this is a game absolutely worth owning on the Switch. This was a dark horse game of the year contender back in 2013 and a cult following for the title continues to this day. It’s a non-stop sci-fi romp with as much heart as senseless explosions.

8 / 10 - DOOM 64
Mar 31, 2020

GREAT - Doom 64 is as fun to play today as it was back on the Nintendo 64, while looking better than ever. If you’re looking for a mindlessly entertaining way to pass the time until you can play Doom Eternal on the Switch this might be the best remedy for you.

EXCELLENT - I absolutely adore Animal Crossing: New Horizons. Fans of the series will appreciate numerous quality of life improvements, especially when it comes to interior decorating. The new crafting mechanic and Nook Miles Rewards system are welcome additions to an already addictive experience. With beautiful graphics, charming characters, memorable soundtrack, and an unbelievable lasting value, this one will be on my Switch HOME screen for years to come.

WORTH CONSIDERING - This is a game that everybody should get some enjoyment out of, but odds are you’ll spend much more time playing the included arcade port. One day I hope to see the quality sequel diehard fans deserve, but for now I am happy to be able to get my Bubble Bobble fix on the Switch. I still had a good time playing through it, and was satisfied completing it, but the original is still light years ahead of this.

8 / 10 - Afterparty
Mar 24, 2020

GREAT - Follow Milo and Lola, recent college graduates having just been inducted into hell as they search for answers, but more importantly, try and find a way out back to the land of living via drinking Satan under the table. Hell is party central and there’s a great adventure game to be had here. Dark, mature humor, vibrant visuals, and a storyline that’s a blast to be a part of, make Afterparty another great title from developer Night School Studio. Hell is a party, and one that’s not a snooze fest.

8 / 10 - Overpass
Mar 23, 2020

GREAT - Overpass is a blast to play if you enjoy playing Gran Turismo style simulation driving games and less arcade feeling titles. I would associate this one more with Spintires: Mudrunners than any other type of game I have played. If you enjoy ATV riding in real life or have always wanted to give it a go, but can’t, this is the game for you and a very good one at that.

7.5 / 10.0 - La-Mulana
Mar 17, 2020

GOOD - La-Mulana 1 & 2: Hidden Treasures Edition should appeal to those gamers who enjoy difficult gameplay and cryptic hints set in a Metroidvania style universe. Those that grew up during the ‘80s and liked adventure games on the NES are the target market for this one. Just be prepared for obscure puzzles, tons of death traps, and challenging enemies!

6.5 / 10.0 - Langrisser I & II
Mar 10, 2020

WORTH CONSIDERING - Langrisser I & II is the definition of a game worthy of consideration. Fans of the tactical RPG genre that don’t mind playing map after map of battles with no tutorials and sparse story will be right at home. Newcomers to the genre would be better served elsewhere. These games come directly from the early ‘90s and despite a new coat of paint don’t have a modern feel to them. A free demo on the eShop is recommended before throwing down 50 bones.

EXCELLENT - Two Point Hospital takes on the business management sim as humorously as possible and comes out on top of the genre. Although a revitalization of a classic title from the ‘90s, this new game builds a well balanced and surprisingly deep sim without ever creating a frustrating experience. It’s easy to play on the Nintendo Switch, and hours will quickly slip by as you treat patients for silly illnesses, customize your hospital, and expand your services to maximize those sweet profits! While I generally avoid hospitals like the plague, I’m happy to make an exception for Two Point Hospital.

OUTSTANDING - Murder By Numbers combines Picross puzzle solving with graphic novel gameplay and completely nails the experience thanks to its hilarious writing, endearing characters, awesome visuals, and stellar soundtrack. Fans of either genre should fall in love with this game, and newcomers will find a game that’s approachable and addicting.

9 / 10 - Depixtion
Feb 26, 2020

EXCELLENT - I never expected a developer I had never heard of (DevHour Games) to outdo Jupiter (the developers of the original Picross), but Depixtion does just that. Each image features three layers (each a different primary color) of Picross puzzles to solve, making the final picture even more satisfying upon completion. Add in a superb soundtrack and you have yourself a winner. Puzzle fans should eat this one up.

8 / 10 - Metro Redux
Feb 25, 2020

GREAT - For the first time on a Nintendo system, both Metro 2033 and Metro: Last Light come together in one package. They both run great on the system – even in handheld mode! If you’re looking for a fun post-apocalyptic survival shooter than Metro Redux should fit the bill nicely.

GREAT - Rune Factory 4 Special is one of the most addictive games I’ve played on the Switch so far. There’s always something to do, whether it’s growing more crops, crafting new gear, forging new relationships, fighting off monsters, or exploring new realms. Average graphics and slight control issues aside, this is a pleasant surprise and one of my favorite games of the year.

BAD - Demolish & Build 2018 tries to offer something in the simulation genre that would appeal to many players, in that you can be a demo expert and blow up buildings, smash objects, and then do some replacement construction. Unfortunately, the game falls short on creating a realistic simulation, combined with pretty rough visuals and audio, and confusing progression and secondary gameplay systems. The only demolishing I’ll be doing at this point is removing the game from my Switch.

GOOD - Psikyo Shooting Stars Bravo includes six classic games of varying quality. My personal favorite was the side-scrolling shmup Samurai Aces II: Tengai, with Gunbird 1 & 2 also high up on my list. I was surprised and delighted to spend time with Gunbarich, a brick breaking Arkanoid clone. With limited lasting value this collection is still a fun time…while it lasts.

GREAT - Foam Sword came up with a wonderful little game in Knights and Bikes. Playing the game really makes you feel like you are exploring the island through the eyes of the kids. Anyone who enjoyed The Goonies as well as adventure RPGs should not pass this one up.
