Tyranny is a game that promises depth, moral conflict, and a dark world but in practice, it gave me mostly confusion and exhaustion. I spent quite a few hours in it and still had no idea what I was doing Because of an overwhelming amount of text and systems I had no desire to untangle. The writing is endless and tiring. I usually enjoy text-heavy games, but here it felt like work. Combat was tiring. Slow, unexciting, and more frustrating than rewarding. Eventually, I quit halfway through. It felt like I had failed, but honestly, the game failed to meet me halfway. It didn’t explain itself, didn’t engage me. Tyranny might work for a very specific type of player. I’m not one of them. For me, it was a long, confusing, boring experience that left me with nothing.
