stepwisecliche Mina the Hollower Review
Jun 19, 2026
Proof of concept that a single unique mechanic can introduce fantastic depth to a well-tread genre. Weapons and trinkets are handled in a way that rewards thinking through your loadout before adventuring out into the dangerous unknown. Mina the Hollower replaces the classic in-game map with fantastic world design that makes areas memorable enough to not get lost and hides secrets on every screen. The robust game design means many problems have multiple solutions and offers a feasible path through for many playstyles. The gameplay loop punishes failures just enough to make victory rewarding without making the challenges feel unfair or sadistic.
There were a few spots in the game where some buggy movement or unpredictability lent itself a more frustrating experience, but overall, it was a game that was designed and developed with care and thought. A shoe-in for my personal top games of 2026.
