Torak The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered Review
Oct 5, 2025
I want to preface this with saying that I've only ever played 10 hours or so of the original at the time of release, and nothing in-between then and the release of the remaster.
I was extremely excited to dive into this; Skyrim is my favourite game of all time, the visual upgrades from it's UE5 engine and the countless fans saying how good this game was had me pumped for this 'upgrade'.
Bar the occasional stutters and intermittent pops from LOD, this game does look very pretty. The environments are beautiful, the creatures look clean and the lighting is fantastic - this is especially prominent within the Ayelid dungeons. However... I get the jokes of Bethesda games always being buggy, but some of the issues are so frustrating that the joke is nothing more than a taunt of frustration. I've experienced no end of crashing, one of which caused me to reproduce a 100% crash rate of just trying to fight the final boss in the Shivering Isles DLC. Still 3 months after launch and a bug of this magnitude being unaddressed is a bit too far to warrant the 'haha' gag.
They have clearly added some new features for some quality of life, like shortcut routes out of dungeons and an updated UI. But there are so many QOL features missing, that the datedness in this game becomes more and more apparent.
I'm sure this was outstanding in it's prime, there is clearly quality on for show - I just think it's one of those games that should of stayed in the past and not something brought forward to appeal to the Elder Scrolls fans that are deprived of any content since 2011 (myself included).
I feel like I could just be frustrated from the amount of bugs and crashes I've experienced that the 'older' features stand out more, but seriously... sooo many bugs and crashes...
