South of Midnight is a narrative adventure game that draws its strength primarily from its setting, the creatures you encounter on your journey, its emotional music, and its dark stories. In terms of gameplay, however, it doesn’t offer much, and it can start to get boring after playing for a while. Therefore, it’s best recommended for casual gamers who are primarily interested in the story and the emotional experience.

Just as I fell in love with the original Until Dawn years ago, I was completely absorbed by the newer The Quarry. If you enjoy story-driven games and love a good scare, there’s no reason to hesitate. There are still a few flaws to be found in the game—the camera work indoors can be frustrating, some decisions and QTEs feel superficial, and given how the relationships between the characters intertwine, we deserved more than just a simple “did the character survive or not” at the end. But that doesn’t change the fact that the game provided me with entertainment and suspense for several evenings and evoked emotions that resonated with me long after I finished playing.
