This is not just a contender for game of the year, but also easily one of the best Metroidvania games that I have ever played. The Voidheart Edition packs all content at release thus making it the best way to experience Hollow Knight.
Mega Man delivers his triumphant return with this recent entry providing the perfect blend of difficulty with its tightly designed levels and uniquely crafted powers. It is a Mega Man game for everyone with a multitude of difficulty options.
Broken Sword 5 features a story that slowly uncovers but leaves you hanging for more and a plot that is grand but equally simple enough to grasp. The puzzles are once more the highlight here, but the controls will take some time to get used to, and even then, they are not that extraordinary.
I have consistently advocated good character development and a likable cast and this is all present in Valkyria Chronicles 4. The strategic combat is more of the same but the new cast offers a refreshing change of pace that can overcome the lack of innovation in the gameplay department.
Planet Alpha tickles our imagination with its tremendous beautiful visuals but fails to meet the same quality for its gameplay. It is a trippy otherworldly experience with some faults that prevent it from standing next to the other industry greats like INSIDE and Limbo.
Fans of the anime might enjoy some of the more outrageous story moments in Punch Line, but for those looking for an interesting visual novel in the same vein as Zero Escape, this one, unfortunately, fails to hit the mark.
This is an indie game that understands well how to properly take inspiration from the classic Sonic games, and as a result, it manages to stand out among the many clones. The impact of Freedom Planet is far less now, but it has the potential to carve out its own identity in the future.
An incredibly user-friendly game that is basically developed for the casual fighting game fans. It lacks proper depth but offers a fun combat system and plenty of fan service moments.
This is a breath of fresh air in the current online-focused battle royale infested games market. Strange Brigade tries to mix third-person shooting with a dose of puzzle solving and it does that with an emphasis on co-op. The design of the game is rather bland when played alone but as a co-op game, it has a strong foundation that is both chaotic and tons of fun.
Guacamelee! 2 is an example of a sequel done right. It is one of the most impressive co-op Metroidvania games on the PS4.
Dead Cells is a brutal game that demands your constant attention. It is easy to get lost in the gameplay loop where each subsequent death somehow ends up feeling more rewarding than the last as you keep discovering new gear, unlocking abilities and finding more of the hidden secrets.
It is not easy to mix and mash different genres and end up with a solid result. Salt and Sanctuary looks like a weird fusion of different games from the outside, but it actually manages to work perfectly fine and ends up creating its own sub-genre. It has a beautiful dose of side-scrolling combat mixed with metroidvania exploration and a robust character class system on top of it, offering an endless amount of fun.
The best collection of Mega Man games so far. This offers a fun story, memorable characters and some of the most challenging gameplay in the series. If you want to relive the classic Mega Man X games, this is the definitive way to experience them.
This is one of the better multiplayer offerings on the Nintendo Switch. It doesn't have much appeal solely as a single-player game since there is a lack of content with the short Adventure and Tournament mode, outside from that, it is still plenty of fun if you want to get it as a party game to play together with friends.
What I liked about Shinning Resonance Refrain was that it has a solid cast of characters that are well-written and the combat is dynamic enough that you will keep experimenting with it. It is not a flawless experience but for fans of the genre, it is one of the better games to release this generation.
If you are in the market for a good action adventure game, Legend of Kay is sadly not going to meet your expectations. It is a decent game that has aged terribly and the efforts to remaster it haven't really brought it up to the current generation standards.
As a turn-based strategy game that should have offered more depth with the amount of time that you spend on it, Nobunaga's Ambition: Taishi is disappointingly shallow and fails to carry on the long legacy for a series that is known for its incredibly complex and deep strategical implementation of ancient Japan.
Vampyr is an ambitious action RPG that manages to sell its basic premise really well. It offers good world building and lore but a weak combat system gets in the way of its compelling story and characters.
Yoku’s Island Express is an incredibly fun and exceptionally beautiful game that somehow makes pinball fun. It offers a large variety of locations and has plenty of collectibles that will keep you occupied for a good amount of time.
Little Nightmares: Complete Edition thankfully hasn’t suffered from a noticeable downgrade to get it running on the Nintendo Switch. This is a good opportunity for those who are in the market for a puzzle platformer to give it a chance since some of the issues with the initial game are now fixed with the Complete Edition.
