10 / 10 - Bayonetta 2
Feb 14, 2018

Bayonetta 2 has not suffered with the passage of time and this epic action game remains one of the finest examples of its kind. Featuring the same breathtaking gameplay and incredible action sequences, Bayonetta 2 on the Switch provides an even more complete experience compared to the original thanks to its newfound possibility of playing it everywhere. A real gem that should be in everyone's library.

The original Bayonetta may be almost ten years old but that doesn't mean that its gameplay is any less amazing or that its action loses any pace. Bloody Zombies is a surprising proposal in the cooperative fighting genre that stands out in the Nintendo Switch catalog and that features a long-lasting lifespan, a visual environment worthy of praise and plenty of multiplayer options. It lacks some originality as far as its characters are concerned and its control scheme can be too simple for its own good but Bloody Zombies won't have trouble in capturing a group of fans.

The Next Penelope: Race to Odysseus is an unexpected surprise, a racing game that features a plot and one that involves classical mythology is certainly unusual but its wide variety of content and challenging level, as well as simple and intuitive gameplay, make this game stand out. Pity that it lacks an online multiplayer component.

Tiny Troopers Joint Ops XL arrives at the Nintendo Switch exhibiting a lot of traits from its mobile origins, perhaps too much of them as it feels like this is a compilation and recycling of elements seen on previous games of the series. It does feature a good amount of game modes but overall, it's not challenging enough and it feels like its lifespan is being pushed only through repetition.

Mario Party: The Top 100 does a very good job at bringing previous minigames of the Mario Party series to the 3DS, thanks to an exquisite conversion job whose result is a long lifespan, very good control systems and a fun and involving solo mode. The other side, though, is that Mario Party's multiplayer component misses out in this game, and it certainly feels like a lesser party game than its predecessors.

Squareboy vs Bullies: Arena Edition has its origins in the mobile segment, where most games are very simple to play. This does not mean that those traits have to remain the same when the game is converted to a games' console. Squareboy vs Bullies: Arena Edition for the 3DS is too close to its mobile origins for its own sake, featuring generic levels, little originality and a too short lifespan that will not captivate the players for long enough.

New Style Boutique 3 – Styling Star joins several genres in one game that creates an interesting and fun experience out of the apparently limited role of managing a clothing store. Featuring an enormous amount of content and a good and abundant stream of customization options, New Style Boutique 3 may not appeal to all audiences but it's certainly not without its merits.

Chicken Wiggle may have a lacklustre proposal for a main mode but its online component and level editor make all the difference. If a retro-styled 2D platformer is hardly something very original nowadays, Chicken Wiggle's additional elements beyond its main story turn out to be the game's big surprises and push it beyond a level where it would not quite stand out.

Layton's Mystery Journey: Katrielle and the Millionaire's Conspiracy has a big legacy to honour and by most accounts, it succeeds at it thanks to its varied puzzles, high quality audiovisual environment and interesting plot. At the same time, this game also tries to make the Layton series more accessible to a wider audience at the cost of reducing its difficulty level, which may not please all the series' followers.

Culdcept Revolt brings together elements of several styles and not just from the videogame world but also from board games and card games, in an effort that boasts a very long lifespan and a strong competitive component. While it would make more sense to use the 3DS touchscreen, this feels like a game that can easily draw many hours away and its simplified mechanics and tutorials do a good job at welcoming new players to this series.

Metroid: Samus Returns is a triumphant return to the 2D Metroid games, now taking the form of the series' renovated second game, which successfully adds new elements to the experience that feel just right and provides a marvelous audiovisual environment with a healthy lifespan. All this contributes to form an instant success and a very welcome addition to the Metroid saga.

If the idea of joining a racing game with a rhythm game seems good, Flight of Light doesn't quite put it into practice successfully. Due to a gameplay that requires nearly no effort whatsoever to succeed when playing solo, a completely lackluster audiovisual environment and a price tag that is too high for what is being offered here, Flight of Light will disappoint anyone with high expectations about a racing & rhythm crossover.

Drop it: Block Paradise may not be a monumental masterpiece but it gets the gig right: its amount of levels and simple gameplay mechanics make it enjoyable and its level editor and online sharing will keep it fresh for a long time. Where it doesn't keep up is when it comes to its maladjusted difficulty level and feeling of repetitiveness, which can alienate some players.

Cubit The Hardcore Platformer Robot HD is a long title and one which says a lot about the game itself: it's a hardcore platformer in HD where the player controls a robot. Featuring a very demanding difficulty level and a surprisingly long lifespan, Cubit may not be advised to all audiences but those who persevere will find themselves duly rewarded by an immense feeling of satisfaction.

Sky Force Anniversary has been out for some time but it's only reaching the Wii U now, even if it doesn't suffer from the time lag in its release. This is a game that features an enjoyable gameplay, a good cooperative mode and a decent visual environment. Standing in contrast, there's a rather slow start which can be enjoyed by beginner players and a repetitive soundtrack that could use some variety.

7 / 10 - Forma.8
Mar 15, 2017

With a remarkable visual environment and a demanding degree of difficulty, forma.8 will make the players come up with their own tactics to survive and present them with a large number of puzzles that make this a very interesting and captivating experience.

There are interesting puzzles in Toby: The Secret Mine set within a fantastic visual environment, if only this was enough to extend the game's short lifespan then it would certainly be a highly recommended 2D platformer but the game is so quick to complete that it rules itself out from being at an advantage point when compared to other games of the same genre.

5 / 10 - Back to Bed
Jan 26, 2017

It can be said of Back to Bed that it's a game with a superb visual environment (hard to go wrong with settings from Salvador Dalí and M.C. Escher) and simple but entertaining gameplay mechanics. Where it sadly fails is that it doesn't go beyond too easy challenges and a short lifespan, as the game ends before a truly challenging moment confronts the player.

6 / 10 - Teslapunk
Jan 17, 2017

Teslapunk does a satisfying job at bringing back the spirit of 2D arcade shoot'em ups thanks to its simple gameplay mechanics and plot that is nothing more than a motif for the game to exist. That being said, it could certainly use some improvement in its visual environment and unfortunately its price is too steep for the rather short lifespan and contents it offers.
