Although Freedom Planet does not officially bear the name Sonic the Hedgehog, it deserves to be mentioned in the same breath as the greats of the series. It's the best Sonic game (that's not really a Sonic game) of the last 20 years.

I feel like the only one stuck on the outside looking in at all the fun others are having.

Freedom Planet is the Sonic game that never was. It started as a Sonic fan game before becoming an original intellectual property, and yet, at the end of the day, I would vouch that this is the best Sonic game to come out prior to Sonic Mania. As a result, given the different story paths, the fast-paced action, and the number of stages, Freedom Planet is one of my favorite indie games. It doesn’t feel cheap, it doesn’t feel dated, and it plays extremely well. While it’s not a groundbreaking title, it serves as a love letter for players who enjoy side-scrollers. I recommend it for any system it’s available on, such as PC or Nintendo Switch. Be sure to look out for the sequel when it comes out!

To say that Freedom Planet was worth the wait would be a massive understatement. I’m so glad I finally got a chance to get into this wonderful game on my Nintendo Switch. Not only does it play well, it is full of colorful SNES inspired visuals and has a pumping soundtrack that makes every stage fresh. It’s fun to play on the go or at home, and in many ways I feel it’s better than some of the games which inspired it. While it does get a bit difficult at times, it’s nothing most gamers can’t push through with a little patience. GalaxyTrail has done a fantastic job, and I can’t wait for the sequel. If you enjoy classic platformers with tons of style and substance, look no further than Freedom Planet.

Freedom Planet is a fun platformer that strikes just the right balance of difficulty. There’s a good amount of replayability to be had too with all the collectables and hidden areas to uncover. Once you’ve managed to do all that it’s a great game to speedrun.
