Virtue and a Sledgehammer is an in equal parts angsty and somber exploration of the complex relationship between love and hate. Selkie Harbour and Deconstructeam have eloquently married a simple gameplay premise with tight pacing and a timely emotional core, asking big questions about the enduring nature of humanity without shying away from confronting our destructive nature, making for one of the most essential narrative experiences of the year.

Virtue and a Sledgehammer isn't quite as poignant as others in its broad genre, but it is no less important or provocative. In fact, it might edge out most others because of how provocative it is, but don't mistake some of its edginess for carelessness. I felt attracted to its vibe and presentation. I empathized with what Nina and Pratelle were going through with their mother as a caretaker, and its overall message should ring true for years to come... unfortunately. If you feel frustrated by any of the above, this game can be your rage room for now. Maybe things will get better, maybe they'll get worse.

Players who want a thoughtful story, who want to feel things, who are mad at AI, who just want to smash stuff will really love Virtue and a Sledgehammer. Others might be turned off by the game’s narrative and what it chooses to focus on. I personally felt the game did something unique with its three- to five-hour runtime. For its commentary on humanity, relationships, and technology, Virtue and a Sledgehammer might be one of the most important video games of the year. I hope people play it.
