I have played the game for 1,884 hours; the optimization is absolutely terrible, and you need to buy nearly $200 worth of DLC to fully enjoy it, which is ridiculous. National Focus trees are the soul of Hearts of Iron, and their highly adaptable design has spawned many brilliant mods. Coupled with mechanics that are hard to learn but rewarding to master, the game becomes a platform for passionate players to craft compelling narratives—whether rooted in history or alternate realities.
