By moving back to the formula that made the series so popular in the first place, Nintendo and developer NDcube have not only finally put Mario Party back on the right track but also created one of its best overall entries. Here’s hoping the next stretch of that track includes a proper online mode.

Super Mario Party is a wonderfully presented game packed full of excellent minigames; it’s just that the means to play them are disappointingly uncomplex. Mario Party mode is finally a step back to what fans have been yearning for, but the boards are small and straightforward. Partner Party, River Survival and Sound Stage are superb new additions, but having them limited to certain types of minigames means they get repetitive fairly quickly. Challenge Road is a great attempt at some single player stuff, but it feels a little undercooked too. Everything in Super Mario Party is good; it just consistently restricts itself in ways that keep it from being the great game it could have been.

Super Mario Party is an eclectic celebration of twenty years of star collecting and coin hoarding; bringing together the best bits into one show-stopping, mini-game cake. Paul Hollywood would grab a Joy-Con and give it a thoroughly good handshake. The addition of "Super" to the title is thoroughly deserved - with streamlined, refined mechanics, classic game design, smart mini-games and brilliant extras to tuck into. Whilst the sense of competition and unpredictable antics is still very much in play, there's also a greater feeling of teamwork within mini-games that hasn't been seen since the original Mario Party. The series has found its encore, and it's ready to keep dancing deep into the night. Super Mario Party is the essential Nintendo Switch release, a true return to form for a franchise that was at risk of going stale.

Super Mario Party's new modes offer a welcome break from what some might consider the main attraction: the board game. They're faster, and they focus on two of the Nintendo Switch's strengths that make it such a special console in the first place — good Joy-Con motion controls and fun co-op play. For me, it makes this Super Mario Party the best in franchise history, even if I don't care for the staid board game.

Super Mario Party is, without doubt, the best entry in the series since the days of the GameCube. It's stellar presentation, kooky sense of humour and fantastic mini-games make it for an exceptionally fun party game. Also in the game's favour is that there is variation in the game mode's hitherto unseen in a Mario Party. The game is plagued by a lacking amount of boards and a sometimes painfully slow pace but on the whole, there's a fantastic multiplayer experience in there. This entry is good fun, but the foundations are there to make something sublime with a sequel. If some form of enticing single player is added and the bumps present here are ironed out, a Super Mario Party 2 could be something special.

Super Mario Party injects new life into the series' old board game formula by adding a bunch of fun extra modes such as River Survival, Sound Stage and Toad's Rec Room. Online is unfortunately limited to a few rotating games — a big missed opportunity especially with the debut of Nintendo's new online service. This means you sadly can't play a full board game with other folks away from your couch or immediate vicinity. If you're good with plotting and scheming against friends and family offline, however, this is arguably the best Mario Party game in the franchise's history.

I have a lot of quibbles with Super Mario Party that could have drowned it, but the extras pull it up above water. 80 new minigames, most of which aren't busts, is a feat. Having a team-based mode where you can move around freely and going back to basics with the core board game (goodbye car, hopefully see you never!) was a good move. Restricting play options and easing up on the amount of boards available? Not so much.

Super Mario Party is some of the most fun to be had with a local multiplayer game on the Switch. Unfortunately that is compromised by a deluge of limited modes and design decisions that pull the whole package down. Based the fun factor alone, Super Mario Party justifies its price tag for anyone looking for a new game to play with friends. However, Super Mario Party's fun factor well exceeds the title's fundamental design principles--so tempering one's expectations is a must.

Super Mario Party does offer a lot of fun with the variety of its mini games and game modes. however, the tension between players isn't really there due to the friendliness of the game and the simplified boards. we can't help but to feel a little disappointed.

It's the dialed back board game and its lackluster extra modes that let the whole package down though. While it's still bound to be a great party game to break out when friends visit, it lacks the drama of the best in the series.

Super Mario Party is a conservative return to form that makes the most of its core modes, but you'll need to get some friends in the same room to get the most out of everything it has to offer.

Boards design is oversimplified and disappointing, with that being said it is still one of the best party games on the switch even after you collect all gems you would still revisit the minigames every once in while.

Super Mario Party has some strong new ideas, but the game suffers from issues that have plagued the franchise for years, and the online mode leaves much to be desired.
