Though this standalone spin-off shamelessly reheats the map and overhaul mechanics of Far Cry 5, it introduces enough new ideas and winning missions to make its apocalyptic mark just about worth it.

If Ubisoft had embraced the game’s fundamental silliness instead of cutting its narrative off at the knees by spackling over it with morality, I can only imagine what kind of truly Mad Max-esque shenanigans would have been possible. Its enemies and I are both the villains, but they’re allowed to be comfortable with their morbid, violent fun.

If you had a lot of fun with Far Cry 5, you will appreciate New Dawn. The usual good gunplay and the traditional open world work for the chaos on the streets of Hope County again this time. The cross-references to part 5 and Easter Eggs to other Ubisoft games are also well placed and encourage you to continue playing. But that was it. Especially the artificial "intelligence" and the flat characters quickly spoiled the fun of the game.

Overall, I have mixed feelings about New Dawn. While I applaud Ubisoft for being willing to introduce new mechanics into the tried and true Far Cry formula, it’s a shame that not many of them are successful. The RPG-esque hit point system doesn’t feel at home in what has so far been a traditional first-person shooter series. Weapon upgrades have been dumbed down without the meaningful updates that were available in previous games. And the setting, despite being visually appealing, doesn’t offer returning players anything significant beyond a merely serviceable narrative. New Dawn isn’t a bad game, but it certainly feels like a missed opportunity.

As I said, there's plenty of game here, and it's all been a joy. Far Cry 5 was one of the best games in the series, and yet New Dawn may have just eclipsed it with some fine-tuning and a brave new world to explore. There is more than enough content to never feel that you're grinding (although you are), and it fulfills one of the weirdest human fascinations, and that's the life after a world-encompassing cataclysm. Far Cry: New Dawn has nothing less than a main game in Far Cry series and it is a very complete game full of high quality content. Despite of some problems in story, i must say that amazing graphics, deep gameplay with new RPG elements and features, even more beautiful Hope County (than Far Cry 5) and many different activities to do, made Far Cry: New Dawn one of the best spin-offs that we've seen so far and either you play Far Cry 5 or not, you should definitely experience Far Cry: New Dawn, because it is absolutely worth your time and money.

Far Cry New Dawn reskins the entire map of Far Cry 5, adding enough new mechanics to prevent it from feeling like a retread. While the new villains are lackluster, the return of Joseph Seed is very welcome, giving new depth to the character and his world. With Outpost invasions, Expeditions, and treasure hunts, there is a ton of content here, and almost all of it is fun. There is very little filler in Far Cry New Dawn, and by streamlining the content, Ubisoft has delivered a game that is razor sharp.

There’s plenty of things to love about New Dawn despite all the things that fell short of what could’ve been. Whether your figuring out the riddles left behind by those that protected their treasures, clearing outposts over and over again with a different method each and everytime, or my personal favourite pastime which is unleashing my “War Boar” Horatio to send all the high way men flying no matter how strong they were since Horatio is the most broken character in all of Far Cry in my personal opinion, there’s so much fun to be had in the wild mix of chaos that just works and makes the series feel fresh and alive again.

Let's get this straight, Far Cry New Dawn is a reskin of Far Cry 5. It never claimed to be anything different. But in the process of trying to create its own identity, it accidentally stumbled onto something great. The new characters, as well as old ones, make this an experience that is worth going through. The new mechanics and systems are equally as engaging with special mention given to the wonderfully realised Expeditions. The microtransaction heavy resource system and the fact that it is still the same Hope County does hinder it a bit, but it doesn't stop it from being fun. If you like Far Cry 5, this game is for sure up your alley.

Far Cry New Dawn is all over the place, as crafting and resource gathering slow the game down. The RPG elements are unnecessary and not at all fitting for Far Cry. The story moves at a feverish pace, and ultimately stumbles across the finish line with underdeveloped characters, grinding materials for upgrades, and a lackluster finale. With all of that said, the shooting, stealth, and open-world are still an absolute joy. And Far Cry New Dawn finally ties up some loose ends that were dangling in Far Cry 5. Far Cry New Dawn makes the apocalypse overwhelmingly colorful, fun, and an exciting twist on the environment of Hope County.

Far Cry: New Dawn scores positively for many things, and one of them is for bringing, for the first time, a direct sequence of the previous title. Even if it has its flaws and can be a little more of the same, it is possible to have fun in this floral apocalyptic scenario that it delivers.

Far Cry: New Dawn cuts away some of the bloat of its predecessor Far Cry 5, to deliver a cleaner, more focused experience. The visual style breathes a good degree of life into a setting we've seen before, and Expeditions add more variety on top of that. The systems push you towards repeating content, but the boring rewards don't back that up. And hunting, once one of the core parts of Far Cry, is mostly an afterthought here. Despite those problems, New Dawn's short running time is a boon and the story provides closure to those who played the previous game. If you played and loved Far Cry 5, pick up New Dawn. If you didn't, know that it's still fun, but you'll lose some of the context.

In the end, New Dawn is still fun, it’s pretty to look at and the guns for hire system is still great. It just doesn’t do much with its new setting and the main story is a tad bit short. Far Cry New Dawn is definitely another Far Cry game, though the changes it makes to keep everything feeling fresh are intriguing. a very light RPG touch makes much of the typically repetitive content feel new with a difficulty curve that will challenge how people play. While it can be played independently, Far Cry 5 and New Dawn together create an interesting story package featuring some great twists, turns, and betrayals of the player (even if those pesky convenient macguffins keep coming into play). Coming less than a year after 5, New Dawn does retain some of the sins of its predecessor, but it still managed to make enough new inroads to keep me hooked until the end.

As an overall package, Far Cry New Dawn delivers a focused expansion of the world that was established in Far Cry 5. You don't need to play the prior game to enjoy what's here, but those who have done so will come into New Dawn with a greater appreciation of the world and the characters. The more limited scope means no add-on features (like Far Cry Arcade) and no season pass, but it also allowed for some experimentation that you don't usually see in a AAA title. Put this one on your purchase list, but you should stick with the regular edition and skip the deluxe edition. The deluxe edition is $10 more, with nothing to offer except some early weapon unlocks with alternate skins.

Far Cry never felt like just a shooter or just another open world game to me, but rather, a combination of many genres that offered balance between the cozier, more relaxing parts of the game and the high stakes, overstimulating pace of the main storyline. I guess maybe that's why, as I approached this review in the wake of Far Cry 5, I oddly felt the need to pin it to a single identity. I'm disappointed to see the series scale back at the expense of other features but New Dawn does a fine job of reinforcing that creative decision and offers some small hope that the writing may continue to improve. If outposts are your favorite part of the series, then you'll likely enjoy Far Cry New Dawn.

Far Cry New Dawn hardly reinvents its core formula, for better or worse. The expected bits are all there, peppered with a few low-impact RPG elements. This isn’t an evolution of the franchise, but rather a more favorable pairing of gameplay and setting than past releases. New Dawn sure feels familiar, but it definitely knows how to have a good time.

Far Cry New Dawn has great ideas, tons of activities, but the RPG system doesn't work as expected in the mix and there are too many bugs. Rivals are not as strong as the series deserves, but the story covers what needed to be told.

Purely as a spin-off to Far Cry 5, New Dawn does manage to offer a solid continuation of the story and already established gameplay mechanics. If we take it as a completely new game, it doesn't manage to leave that great of an impression.

Neither the premise nor the execution of the setting and story ever justify the project, but for fans who haven't tired of the series' formula yet, you can't really go wrong with more of the same when it's well done. It's mechanically tight and often engaging while it lasts.

Far Cry: New Dawn is basically more Far Cry 5, along with all the good and the bad that such a prospect entails. If you're feeling a bit burnt out by today's established open-world formula and expect more from the genre, the game will end up feeling like more of the same as opposed to something truly new. If you absolutely enjoyed its predecessor, though, then New Dawn is more of what you loved with some needed narrative closure to boot.

Far Cry New Dawn offers a solid gaming experience, full of vivid slightly familiar landscapes, a fun range of weapons and an appropriately crazy pair of sisters to go up against. Hours of entertainment are packed in whether you've visited Hope County before the nukes went off or not, with the easter eggs really great touches for fans of the series. However, New Dawn and the transformation of Hope County offered more hope on what the game could be. More could have been changed and surprisingly, given the epic craziness that was Blood Dragon, the insane dial hasn't been cranked up enough.

Far Cry New Dawn while being a great experience feels more like an expansion to Far Cry 5 than it does its own stand alone title. This is not a bad thing, but if it had to be compared? It would be like saying New Dawn is equivalent to The Witcher 3’s Blood & Wine which was a great addition to the main title.

New Dawn delivers a shallow exploration of its premise and is more interested in the sheer anarchic fun of a fully refined playground of carnage. That’s fine for a game that continues to indulge in the franchise’s weirdest excesses while fine tuning its formula for maximum fun.

There's some great mechanics such as the perks system, unique mission variety, hunting for animals and even some of the weapons can be fun to use. But the mangled progression system, dull storytelling, finicky shooting and the abysmal vehicle controls damper the fun overall. Fans of the franchise will find plenty to enjoy, but New Dawn is a far cry from the series' best.

Far Cry: New Dawn is a rather simple, uninspired game, but it manages to capture an important aspect of a quality video game very well. Being fun. It isn’t the best in the series, and I would recommend playing Far Cry 5 before jumping into this. It’s a direct sequel to 5, so that background would help. Far Cry 5 is also generally a better game and is a more traditional Far Cry experience. But don’t let that stop you from picking up New Dawn. If you’re a Far Cry fan then chances are you will enjoy this game. Despite it being a practical DLC to Far Cry 5, it manages to save face by being $40, rather than $60. It means Ubisoft is able to acknowledge that this entry is lacking in many areas compared to the standards the previous games have set.

Fire may have rained from the skies and wiped out entire nations, but the action in Far Cry New Dawn is pretty much the same as it ever was, only less so. Far Cry: New Dawn can quite easily provide a weekend of fun, but when it comes to recalling your favourite games of 2019, don't expect to remember this post-apocalyptic adventure. Its streamlined RPG elements do add some welcome structure, but this trek through Hope County may seem familiar to a fault. Unfortunately, while the past 4 instalments in the Far Cry series have all been excellent, New Dawn is not. The post-apocalyptic paint job and garish yet joyful weaponry do nothing to hide the fact that you’re doing exactly the same thing once again – except this time it’s pink and are facing off against even less interesting villains. The best moments of Far Cry New Dawn are when it’s referencing what happened in Far Cry 5 and for a pseudo-sequel, this shouldn’t be the case.
