Mortal Kombat and excessive violence had gone hand in hand from the start. But MK11 can feel like it's trying too hard, with animations that start to feel dragged out and forced. More respect for the viewer's time would have been nice. Ending a match with a long Fatal Blow and then getting the invitation to perform the fatality right after can feel like the Simpsons meme: "Stop, stop! He's already dead!"

Overall, Mortal Kombat 11 is a stellar fighting game and is one of the best ones ever made in my opinion. The depth and variety it offers are unparalleled, even by the likes of Injustice 2, another NetherRealm creation. There are so many characters to customize and master — with many more on the horizon — which should keep you enthralled for months to come.

Mortal Kombat 11 is the latest game in the 25-year history of the franchise continuing from the massive success of the last few titles under the helm of Netherealm studios. It’s been four years since MK10, and we have had Injustice 2 in between which has had an impact on the way we play this current title, for the better of which I will cover later on in this review.

Mortal Kombat 11 is both joyful and frustrating. It's far and away a superior game to Mortal Kombat X where it truly matters - the roster is strong and varied, the visuals are phenomenal, and the flow of battle is as sharp as ever. If you play with friends, solid online offerings will deliver in droves. If you're thinking of playing solo, although Story mode is some of Netherrealm's best, the grind to unlock everything beyond that is sobering. It's this grind that means Mortal Kombat 11 stands besides Mortal Kombat X, and not above it.

A complete and challenging gameplay, stunning visuals, detailed animations along with memorable music, all are the reasons for Mortal Kombat 11 to be the best Mortal Kombat in the last few generations of video games. Add to these, a very useful tutorial, good netcode, various online options and a vast customization system, and you will have one of the best Fighting games of this generation in front of you. "Mortal Kombat 11" lives up to the epic beatings and turns out to be a true circumference bombast in the test. A revised fighting system, fluid moves and a reduced tempo make the fighting sequences even more complex and unique. Numerous game modes, lots of loot boxes and items as well as a brand new customization system ensure that the player's motivation remains at a permanently high level. Despite the faff and taint of shady modern practices, it is still a competent and well worked fighter. The length of moves and tricks at hand, as well as the wealth of extra skills to learn is staggering, coupled with a very strong roster of new and old favourites. Combat has been reworked and tweaked to suit a faster fight system, and there is enough customisation to suit most kinds of playstyle for each character. Push aside the flaws and embrace it for the legacy that Mortal Kombat has created for itself.

Mortal Kombat 11 is an excellent fighting game. It offers many new features in its gameplay, including elements that bring innovation in mechanics that most developers do not usually risk altering - and that's a pretty positive thing. The story mode is still great, although its conclusion is somewhat disappointing. The different game modes are great as well, like the vast tutorial, the functional online, Towers and Krypt. It's in Krypt, however, that you'll notice that you'll have to play for a long time to get access to a lot of game content and this can be a little discouraging.

Mortal Kombat 11 is a very divisive game, most notably due to the heavy focus on unlockables and in-game kurrency, but if you look past that, it's a very competent and enjoyable fighting game that I would happily recommend. I have no doubt that it will become a staple of tournaments in the coming future, and it deserves to - it polishes the kombat model introduced in MK9 and MKX, making it a fighting game to die for.

When I started writing this review I had mixed feelings about Mortal Kombat 11. The story was a blast and the core fighting mechanics are fantastic, but the badly judged progression system was such a massive grind. Since then, though, I’ve had to re-write chunks of this review to reflect the updates that NetherRealm have put out. I can’t speak for the future and where things might go, but for now they’ve managed to really improve the economy. Hopefully they’ll continue on the path of goodness. So, before the updates Mortal Kombat 11 was going to score less, but now I feel happy giving it….

Mortal Kombat 11 is a great fighter, perhaps the best the series has been to date. It’s a visual spectacle filled with lots of ways to play for players of all skill levels, and features the most enjoyable fighting game story I’ve ever gone through. It also has some boring new characters, crippled further by the extensive customization suite, and a growing disconnect between the regular fighting and the fatalities. Small issues, but issues all the same. Still, you’ll probably be having too much fun to care.

Mortal Kombat 11 serves up everything that you would expect from an MK game. Gore, broken bones, fatalities, brutalities, great combat, and a solid netcode. Mortal Kombat 11 is everything that we expected from NetherRealm Studios. The combats are as intense and bloody as ever, and the story is more than what you'd expect from a fighting title. The only downsides here would be the extreme need for grinding in order to unlock new items and some bad character actings, which prevent MK11 from becoming the ultimate fighting experience.

Mortal Kombat 11 looks great and manages to make things fascinating to watch. With the ability to interact with people and tons of new and comical finishing moves, it has a lot to delight fans. Even if fatal blows and the unlock system need to be reworked, it's still a good fighting game. At most, I'd say it's something to be cautious of and certainly see what, if anything, changes in the future, it just hinges on what you want. In a truly admirable feat of game design, every character manages to feel fresh despite some of them being around since 1992.
