Sea of Thieves' latest monthly update is available today and free for all players, though for some pirates, it's almost as though they're getting the new content plus interest.

Legends of the Sea introduces a new NPC in the heavily tattooed Umbra, who resides at Lagoon of Whispers. She tasks players with exploring the open world and finding the many easter eggs dedicated to the game's most prolific streamers, storytellers, and swashbucklers.

Dozens of players have received immortalizations in the game in the way of altars, rock paintings, props, and more, and in Legends of the Sea, commendations can be earned for finding them all. Some need only be interacted with, while others will have to be brought to Umbra in some way. Players who embark on Umbra's questline will be rewarded with several new tattoos of their own.

As with all updates for Sea of Thieves, the titular content is only the beginning. Duke is back to the game's taverns, though lore hounds will notice he doesn't yet explain his absence. Instead, he buys your silence with new Gilded Voyages. Every player can select just one, so Rare instructs players to coordinate with their crew members as to who chooses which company to embark on a Gilded Voyage for. Pirates who don't need to rep increase can instead sell their loot at The Reaper's Hideout for double gold, and The Reaper is now the exclusive buyer of Reaper's Chests.

Speaking of Reaper's Chests, there's a new gilded variety of those too, and it'll earn players a heftier bounty should they be able to carefully deliver it to the Reaper. New Tomes come to the game too for players patient enough to open Reaper's Chests. Five new Tomes of Fire are up for grabs and will reward players with both in-game Doubloons as well as six new Xbox achievements. More Ashen cosmetics are unlocked upon completion as well.

Spendy pirates can also check out new Lunar New Year cosmetics in the real-money Pirate Emporium, or spend Doubloons on new ship cosmetics, weapons, and instruments in the Black Market by talking to Duke.

Optional Cross-play

As for gameplay changes, players can now opt out of cross-play, a feature that was promised long ago and is meant to appease Xbox players who feel they're at a disadvantage sailing alongside the PC crowd. Storage crates found adrift will now spawn items inside of them too, much like cannonball crates and others like them have already done. The full range of patch notes can be found on the game's website.

The Legends of the Sea update is available now and will require hard drive space of 4.9 GB on Xbox One and 7.8 GB on Xbox One X and PC.
