Xbox Console Streaming Now Available for All Xbox Insiders

Written by on | OpenCritic

If you're an Xbox Insider -- or if you sign up here -- you're now able to stream your console to select Android devices via Xbox Console Streaming.

Not to be confused with Project xCloud, Xbox Console Streaming displays precisely what your console would show you, only you can play it on a number of devices other than your television. Anything already installed on your Xbox will be available to play on compatible devices at no extra charge.

Previously, the Xbox Console Streaming app was only available to select participants in the higher tiers of the Xbox Insider Program, but now the initiative has gone wide for all Insiders. In order to play it properly, you'll need an Android device running Marshmallow (6.0) or an earlier OS, the Xbox Console Streaming (Preview) app, a Bluetooth-enabled controller, and a home internet speed of 10 Mbps download / 4.5 Mbps upload.

Provided you check all those boxes, you can start streaming Xbox games on the go, though we'd caution you to find a strong free wifi, or else the data charges to your Android device may get scary. Xbox does pan to expand the program further to include more devices sometime this year. Presumably that includes iOS.

What's the difference between Xbox Console Streaming and Project xCloud?

Unlike Sony, which only offers a Remote Play app for console streaming, or Stadia, which doesn't need a console at all, Microsoft actually offers both kinds of game streaming to players. Project xCloud is a library of 50+ games that players need not even have purchased. If you join the xCloud preview, the full library is currently free as you are essentially beta testing the service for Microsoft.

In the months ahead, access to xCloud will be bundled with Xbox Game Pass Ultimate, but for now anyone is able to sign up and, once invited, play the games for free. The list includes both first- and third-party titles such as Sea of Thieves, Gears 5, Sniper Elite 4, and World War Z. You can sign up for Project xCloud here.
